Image size: 10.2 x 18.2 cm. In this beautiful linocut from the Guillaume Corneille Collection, the painter sets up some of the elements that constituted the language of his Cobra painting: the spiral, the flying fish, the surrealist eye, the fish figures, the geology of a mountainous landscape. The lines are reminiscent of children's drawings. The fusion of the mineral and the living leaves room for several interpretations of the image. This language was born in the painter's mind after his observation of the works of Miro and Picasso and followed his stay in Tunisia (1949) where he reproduced the artistic itinerary of Paul Klee. There is something primitive in the motifs and a love of distant cultures, as in Matisse's painting. Secure delivery by UPS Guillaume Corneille (1922-2010) was born in Liège of Dutch parents and was a member of the Cobra group along with Constant, Dotremont, Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Noiret, Doucet and Alechinsky.
