Throughout his oeuvre, Gideon Kiefer (°1970, Neerpelt) investigates the porous fragility of memory. In addition, his work often contains a subtle social criticism, in which contemporary ecological, social or political issues are not shunned. His grandfather's art books, or rather the memory of rummaging through these books as a child, form the impetus for Kiefer's paintings on wood. The artist selects details that intrigue him, reinterprets them, and gives them a new meaning and context – a process that recalls the workings of our memory. Handwritten text, additions in the form of collages, or small anecdotes in the margins reveal a piece of the personal content hidden in each work, just as they expose the artists' growing concerns about the current climate crisis.
