Watercolour and India ink on paper, signed and dated lower right in ink. Nice original old work, made by the painter at the age of 27, delivered with a certificate of authenticity. Dimensions with frame : 35,4 x 28,4 cm, approximately. Size of the work: 22,5 x 16 cm. In 1949, Guillaume Corneille painted and drew several port scenes, notably the port of Amsterdam. In an abstraction "in germination" (the term comes from the art critic Charles Estienne), like a germinating plant, the figures emerge and gradually reveal themselves: the character, the fish, the mast of the boat, the radiant sun. Guillaume Corneille's art is always a narrative art, as with the Spanish painter Joan Miró, whom he frequented at SW Hayter's studio. Guillaume Corneille (1922-2010) was born in Liège of Dutch parents and was one of the members of the Cobra group with Constant, Dotremont, Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Noiret, Doucet and Alechinsky.
