At dawn on October 9, 1991, the 1,880 workers of Christo and Jeanne-Claude began to open the 3,100 umbrellas of Ibaraki and California, in the presence of artists from both places. This temporary work of art from Japan and the United States reflected the similarities and differences in the way of life and land use in two inland valleys.
