Painter, sculptor, engraver and lithographer, Paul Wunderlich is born in Eberswalde (Germany) in 1927. He studies at the School of Fine Arts in Hamburg (1947-51). Until the late '50s, the artist creates figurative work (painting and printmaking), choosing his topics in modern German history. Soon, his work is tinged with eroticism he treats from a surrealist manner. His art, which mixes contemporary and classical references, is inspired by mythology, and focuses on the human form. Paul Wunderlich constitutes, over time, a large graphic works (engravings and lithographs). His art is present in the collections of major international museums (Moma, New York, Paris National library, British Museum in London, etc. Teacher of Art (at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg in particular), Paul Wunderlich devotes himself primarily to sculpture from 1980 on. Paul Wunderlich lives and works in Hamburg and in France; he is considered one of the most important representatives of "magical realism".
