In 1989 Panamarenko went deep sea diving in the Red Sea. There, apart from the design for his diving equipment The Portguese Man of War, there is also the idea of an advanced deep-sea diving device that he calls Elbow because of its shape. To explore the sea, the artist needs a device to dive deep in the most efficient way possible. Two versions soon appear; the first driven by an electric motor, the second by manpower. The first design consists of a plastic tube with holes in it, which is propelled by an electric motor that drives an 8 cm screw. However, the batteries of the device do not last very long.
This object was used by Panamarenko during this period to test his creations. The object is unique, and by the way also signed by Panamarenko himself. The diving mask is placed on a beautiful black base, and is mounted on and protected by Plexiglas. All in excellent to perfect condition.
