5 letters handwritten by Panamarenko, which come from the collection of Ronny Van De Velde, have been exhibited (see catalogue). Panamarenko wrote the letters in 1965 on the train on the way to happening Ostend. The letters were written on the back of a letter of resignation from one of his mother's shoe store employees.
"Happening News" is closely intertwined with the "happenings" that took place from July 1965 to March 1966 in Antwerp and Ostend, and with the aggressive responses from the government. The group around Panamarenko and Heyrman, consisting of the Japanese artist Yoshio Nakajima, the Belgian artist Wout Vercammen, the German artist Bernd Lohaus, the Dutch artist Jeroen Henneman and the Dutch happening makers Thom Jaspers/Jasper Grootveld, picked up themes from Provo (anti- war, anti-car…) but mainly worked from an artistic perspective. They partly satirically combined elements from comics, science fiction and popular American visual culture to shape their belief in a kind of artistic utopia.
