Frans Minnaert, the artist
Frans Minnaert was born on December 4, 1929 in Idegem, near Geraardsbergen. As a visual artist he took lessons, among others, at the Municipal Academy of Aalst and the Académie Royale des Beaux Arts in Brussels.
Eager to learn and always looking for new experiences, Frans Minnaert undertook study trips to Yugoslavia, South Africa and Japan during the sixties and seventies, where he also exhibited repeatedly.
He was founder-teacher and director (1970-1995) of the Academy of Visual Arts of Community Education in Anderlecht. During his policy, the academy grew into a school with fame across the country.
In the 1970s Minnaert was a laureate of the Prize for Drawing of Kortenberg, the Prize for Young Artists at the Basel International Art Fair (Switzerland) and the Graphic Art Prize of Diano Marina (Italy). In 1974 he was selected for the Venice Biennale with the polyptych “Genesis”.
Frans Minnaert's life as an artist was a constant journey, a search for his own truth. The landscapes in which he lived and the people he met were his familiar themes. Although his way of interpreting has evolved, it is noticeable that his latest works still link up with and build on his earlier oeuvre. Until the end of his life, Frans Minnaert painted in an inalienably personal and recognizable way. Frans Minnaert's oeuvre can be found in numerous museums and collections, nationally and internationally.
Frans Minnaert died on January 18, 2011.
