Etching on Rives BFK Image: 139 mm x 90 mm - Total paper dimensions: 331 x 249 mm Size with frame : 40.5 cm x 33.5 cm Atelier Leblanc, Paris Commercial edition of 20 copies. This is no. 16/20 Atelier Corneille stamp on the back. Referenced in the Donkersloot catalogue raisonné n°52, page 84 ‘Eclosion’ is the testimony of a lived experience. Fascinated by the work of Lévi-Strauss and the first film reports on Africa, Corneille (1922-2010) and his first wife Henny Riemens (1928-1992) embarked on the mad project of crossing Africa from East to West from the River Niger, over several months from 1956 to 1957. Corneille experienced a black sun in the desert, in a geological landscape where the four elements merged. Mineral becomes vegetable and vice versa. ‘Eclosion’ is both a sunrise and a description of the birth of a plant. In the catalogue of the exhibition at Colette Allendy in 1954, the art critic Charles Estienne identified in Corneille's work an ‘abstraction in germination’, that is to say, an abstraction in the making, never far from figuration, and called for a multiplicity of meanings. The black sun will be a recurring motif in Corneille's work. Secure delivery by UPS.
