Panamarenko, the stage name of Henri Van Herwegen (Antwerp, February 5, 1940 – Brakel, December 14, 2019) was a Belgian sculptor.[1] He is considered one of the most important Belgian sculptors of the second half of the 20th century. He made many assemblages related to flying. Panamarenko is a pseudonym and a contraction of "Pan American Airlines and Company". However, there was also a Russian former general, politician-ambassador in the Cold War named Ponomarenko (pronounced Panamarenko). The artist Henri Van Herwegen heard this name on the radio.
